GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In continuation of its philanthropic support in Marquette, Meijer today donated two reconditioned semi-trucks and trailers to Northern Michigan University’s new CDL Truck Driving Program.
“Meijer strives to be a good neighbor throughout the communities we serve, and are pleased our retired vehicles will be put to good use by Northern Michigan University students learning a very important skill,” Marquette Meijer Store Director John Spaulding said. “We look forward to opening our Marquette store next month, and being part of this strong community for years to come.”
The vehicles – valued at an estimated $100,000 – had previously been part of the Meijer fleet and were recently replaced with ones that offered the latest technology in emissions control. Both of the vehicles have been reconditioned and prepped for their next use at NMU, including new tires, maintenance inspections and new graphics.
“This is an extraordinary gift that will help us launch an educational program to meet high industry demand,” NMU President Fritz Erickson said. “We thank Meijer for this investment, and for its faith in Northern to train the highest-quality CDL drivers for Meijer and other companies throughout the region.”
Since 2010, Meijer has donated 93 tractors and 33 trailers to community partners across the Midwest.
