The 195,000 square foot supercenter welcomed its first customers with over 300,000 items – from produce to clothes – proving that they can be more than just a retailer. She showed up with her fiance, Kevin Pawlowski, and his mother, Peggy, at 4:30 a.m. They brought out chairs, sitting next to a “Line starts here” sign. “I love this store. I’ve been to Meijer before,” Saathhoff said.

    A golfing tournament that brings the top female golfers in the world to West Michigan while helping feed those in need turns five this year. Over the past four years of the Meijer LPGA Classic, Meijer has donated more than $3.1 million to food pantries. This year, organizers hope to raise an additional $1 million.     In 2017, Meijer’s Simply Give Campaign was able to raise $87,400 for St. Vincent de Paul’s Emergency Food Pantry. According to Feeding America, $1 equals 10 meals so that equates to 874,000 meals provided by the generous Alpena community. The way that the Simply Give campaign works is that customers at Meijer purchase $10 gift cards that go directly to St. Vincent de Paul. Three times a year, the campaign is active for weeks at a time.

    A Vigo County food pantry is receiving $75,200 from the Terre Haute Meijer store because of generosity of holiday shoppers at the end of 2017. New Life Fellowship Compassion Ministries Food Pantry will receive $75,200 in gift cards to purchase food to stock pantry shelves and feed the hungry.

    Beginning January 22, The Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) in collaboration with Meijer will offer shoppers free ice skating admission passes to The Rink at Campus Martius Park. In total, 500 passes will be distributed per week at six store locations in Detroit and surrounding suburbs.

    Meijer held its fourth annual Very Merry Meijer event across all 235 Meijer stores in the Midwest on Dec. 16. The event consists of each store picking an unsuspecting customer and surprising them when they reach the cashier by paying for their entire shopping cart. Diana Wood of Elburn was the lucky winner at the St. Charles Meijer that December day. Wood just so happened to be shopping for toys and other items to donate to the Lazarus House in St. Charles, which she has been doing for the past several years.
