About Meijer

Here you will learn about our humble beginnings, and how we became the pioneer of the one-stop shopping concept.

About Meijer

What started as a small barbershop in Greenville, Mich. has transformed into a retail phenomenon and also one of the most reliable and convenient retailers in the Midwest. Back in 1934, Hendrik Meijer opened his first grocery store, guided by a commitment to customers, team members, and community. It was in the midst of the Great Depression, and the focus was on providing quality groceries for his neighbors at a great price. Ninety years later, those core values continue to steer the privately-held and family operated company as it has grown to more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets, and express locations across six states and employs more than 70,000 people.

Hendrik, and his son, Fred Meijer, were innovators at heart. And so, in June 1962, when they opened a store in Grand Rapids, Mich. called “Thrifty Acres,” they pioneered the American supercenter and the “one-stop shopping” concept. But Meijer is more than just a pioneer; it’s a family company committed to meeting other families where they are – online or in-store – by offering choices that include fresh foods, high-quality apparel, household essentials, and health and wellness products and services.

Meijer is also committed to supporting the communities it serves by donating more than 6 percent of its net profit to local organizations each year, and sponsoring hundreds of community events.

Under the leadership of Meijer President & CEO Rick Keyes, the company remains true to the simple philosophy of Fred Meijer: “ … take care of your customers, team members, and community … and all of those will take care of you, just like a family.”

What is Meijer?

Meijer is consistently recognized as a Great Place to Work and annually donates at least 6 percent of its profit to strengthen its communities.

Tell me about the retailer’s history.

In 1934, Hendrik Meijer saw an opportunity to take care of the customers who visited his Greenville, Mich. barbershop. He purchased $338.75 worth of merchandise on credit, and together with his 14-year-old son Fred, opened Meijer’s Grocery. In 1962, Hendrik and Fred revolutionized retail by breaking down the barriers between selling groceries, clothing and hardware, opening the first ever supercenter. Today, Meijer remains privately owned and family-operated.

What makes Meijer different from other stores?

Meijer stores offer all the convenience and value customers expect from the company that pioneered the supercenter concept, along with the fresh, high-quality food and friendly customer service they’d want from a local grocer. We’re able to bring this hometown feel to our stores by virtue of being a smaller, family-owned, regional retailer based in the Midwest. We respect our team members, addressing them by their first names, at the individual store level and up through to the corporate offices. We are committed to enriching lives in the communities we serve and live our purpose every day by empowering our team members to play a role in our giving efforts.

What is sold in a typical Meijer store?

A typical store has a fresh grocery area, often featuring locally grown produce; a full-service deli; a fresh meat counter offering custom cuts of the highest quality meat, an expansive wine, beer and spirits selection; a drive-up pharmacy; and a health and beauty area. A Meijer store also offers general merchandise, such as clothing, electronics, toys and sporting goods, as well as seasonal items, such as a garden center in the spring and holiday décor around the holiday season.

What is our approach to community involvement?

Meijer cares about the communities we serve and strives to make them a better place to live, work and play. Meijer donates more than 6 percent of its profit annually to nonprofits across its Midwest footprint, and sponsors hundreds of local events. While its main philanthropic focus is hunger relief, Meijer also contributes to numerous DEI, environmental and local efforts meaningful to its customers and team members.
