Deputies from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office took a break from policing to go shopping Wednesday night for the annual Shop with a Cop event at the Jeffersonville Meijer.

Dozens of community leaders in Fairfield city and township will shop next week for kids who may not otherwise receive Christmas gifts.

To get its shoppers and associates in a holiday frame of mind, Meijer will offer weekend performances of festive tunes by local school choirs and music groups. For the second consecutive year, the retailer has invited local school music groups to come into their stores to sing carols as customers shop the aisles. This year, 115 groups will perform.

The trucks and drivers in “Run on Less Regional,” a freight efficiency demonstration conducted by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), hit an average 8.3 miles per gallon for the recent three-week event, representing a significant improvement over the national average of 6.0 MPG.

The United States Department of Justice's Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said on its website, "The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications."

Meijer is reminding customers that this coming weekend is the perfect time to clear out medicine cabinets and drawers of unused and expired medications. As part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 26, the Midwest retailer expects its pharmacies to help properly dispose of more than 8,000 pounds of forgotten, potentially-harmful medications.

Danielle Brunk, the Meijer Store Director in Port Huron, joined Jason Carr to talk about the large selection of pet costumes Meijer offers. Anna Chrisman from the Michigan Humane Society, brought in three furry models, Dusty, Stella and Herby, for a Halloween fashion show. Dressed as a cowboy, panda, and taco, these furry friends are ready for October 31st!

Zoo Goes Boo presented by Meijer kicks off this weekend at the John Ball Zoo! This exciting event is taking place both this weekend, October 18th – 20th, and next weekend, October 25th – 27th, from 10am – 4pm! Kids can enjoy trick-or-treating, special entertainments, cool decorations, and seeing awesome animals. Kids are encouraged to dress up!

Months after plans for the new Beaumont corner at 13 Mile and Woodward were announced, the first business there is officially open. Wahlburgers opened its fourth location in Michigan at the intersection Thursday.

For the 15th year in a row, FOP hosted its "Shop with a Cop" event (July 29) that provides local kids and teachers the opportunity to pick out back-to-school supplies at Meijer, free of charge.

The tax-free shopping holiday kicked off at midnight and will run through 11:59pm Sunday night. School supplies are the biggest draw. However, teachers and parents aren't the only ones who can score big. If you play your cards (or rather coupons) right, you could get stuff for free.

All supplies less than $20 each and clothes less than $75 each qualify for the discount.

Area Meijer shoppers today can skip the line with a new scan-as-you-go tool launching in stores. Shoppers who download the Meijer Mobile App can scan and bag their items as they shop, which will add each item to a running total that can be viewed throughout the shopping trip.

Customers of Muskegon-area Meijer stores gave over $72,000 to local food pantries to spend at the Grand Rapids-based retailer’s stores. During Meijer’s spring Simply Give campaign, customers across the Midwest donated more than $2.5 million to local food pantries. Since 2008, customers have donated more than $50 million.

As teachers gear up for back-to-school season, Meijer is making it a little easier by offering a 15-percent discount on classroom essentials to teachers. The teacher discount applies to all Meijer stores and extends all summer long and into the school year, from now through Sept. 28.
