GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — As part of its continued efforts to serve the Northeast Ohio community, Meijer announced today a $750,000 donation to two major organizations, Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Greater Cleveland Food Bank.
“We are proud to support these two organizations’ efforts to strengthen the health and wellbeing of our neighbors,” said Rick Keyes, President and CEO of Meijer. “Their commitment to Northeast Ohio community members mirrors our purpose to enriching lives in the communities we serve.”
The donation to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation will help the health system stand up its new community teaching kitchen at its Langston Hughes Community Health and Education Center. The teaching kitchen, located within Cleveland’s Fairfax neighborhood, will provide cooking classes and programs for community members and patients with distinct dietary needs, including older adults, children and families. Grounded in evidence-based programs, the classes aim to assist with cooking skills, nutritional literacy and budgeting to ensure families can prepare healthy and affordable meals.
“Proper nutrition is essential to preventing chronic conditions and helping patients maintain a healthy lifestyle," said Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., Cleveland Clinic President and CEO and holder of the Morton L. Mandel CEO Chair at Cleveland Clinic. “With Meijer’s generous support, our new teaching kitchen will serve as an accessible place for patients and community members to learn and practice making healthy meals together.”
The retailer’s donation to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank supports the food bank’s 2024 Harvest for Hunger campaign, which provides meals for communities, especially to children and families who face high rates of food insecurity when school is not in session during the summer months. For more than 30 years, Harvest for Hunger has been one of the largest annual, community-wide food and funds drives in the nation, serving 21 counties and raising millions of dollars each year to help feed the hungry in Northeast Ohio.
“We are thrilled to receive this generous gift from Meijer as this contribution will help four Northeast Ohio Food Banks provide 750,000 meals to our hungry neighbors right here in our area,” said Kristin Warzocha, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. “We look forward to continuing to build our relationship with Meijer and the Cleveland Clinic and address the issue of food insecurity head on in our community.
With more than 1,400 community partners throughout Northeast Ohio, Meijer has donated tens of millions of dollars to area organizations since 2020.
Earlier this year, the Midwest retailer also opened its first Ohio neighborhood market, Fairfax Market, in the heart of the historic Cleveland Innovation District and two new supercenters in North Canton and Alliance, focused on supporting more communities in its ongoing expansion in the region. By the end of 2025, Meijer will have invested nearly half a billion dollars into the area by opening and remodeling nearly 20 stores, creating nearly 4,000 jobs, and contributing to the missions of local nonprofits.
